Lavin Lift Straps : A Better Solution for Lower-Body Patient Care.

Home

Medicare-approved and hospital-tested, Lavin Lift Straps make it possible for one caregiver to do the work of two.

Using Lavin Lift Straps™ for Patient Care

Lavin Lift Straps™ are both a patented product and a patented process.

When used properly, the straps benefit caregivers by alleviating the physical demands of cleaning, changing and treating patients.

At the same time, they benefit incontinent and/or bed-ridden patients by reducing discomfort and stress, both physical and emotional.

Made from foam-padded nylon with Velcro® and buckle attachments, Lavin Lift Straps adjust easily to secure bed-ridden patients in comfort.

The best way to learn about Lavin Lift Straps™ is to see them in action.

The Single-Strap Process

The Single-Strap Process is appropriate for most patient care situations. Once a correctly-sized Lavin Lift Strap has been secured to the patient’s thigh and attached to a lift, the caregiver activates the patient lifter to gently raise the patient’s lower body high enough to permit changing and cleaning. Lavin Lift Straps work with virtually any patient lifter (with T-bar technology), making it possible for one caregiver to provide treatment with minimal effort.

The Double-Strap Process

The Double-Strap Process is intended for larger patients and those with varicose veins or other conditions resulting in extremely sensitive legs. Using Lavin Lift Straps correctly sized to the patient’s thighs and calves, this process distributes the stress points along the leg, thereby avoiding unnecessary discomfort. Once the straps are securely fastened, the caregiver positions a lifter over the patient’s thigh, attaches the straps and activates the patient lifter. The Double-Strap Process permits a higher lift of the patient’s lower body than the basic single strap process.

The Limb Suspension Process

In addition to lifting a patient’s lower body for cleaning, changing and wound care, Lavin Lift Straps can also be used to suspend limbs during treatment. In the Limb Suspension Process, a caregiver simply attaches an appropriately sized strap to the leg of the patient. Two strap adaptors are then used to secure the strap to a patient lift. Since the Lavin Lift Strap is not a sling but a secure strap, the limb can be raised without danger of slippage. As with all Lavin Lift Strap processes, virtually no lifting is required on the part of the caregiver. Please note: the limb being suspended should not be raised longer than required for the prescribed treatment.

Some important facts about Lavin Lift Straps™

Lavin Lift Straps™ are accessory devices for patient lifters. As such:
• Lavin Lift Straps are not to be used to transport or restrain a patient.
• Patients should not be suspended for a period of time longer than recommended to provide care.
• Patients should not be left unattended while using Lavin Lift Straps.
• Lavin Lift Straps may be used with any patient lifter, portable or built in, with T-bar technology.
• Each Lavin Lift Strap has a tensile strength of 400 pounds per strap.

Directions for correct sizing of Lavin Lift Straps for changing and cleaning:

1. Measure the circumference of the patient's thigh just above the knee joint. This will indicate the correct size strap to be used.
2. Wrap a strap around the patient's leg. If the sizing is correct, the edges of the strap will meet or overlap slightly.

• If the person to be cleaned or treated has a condition such as obesity, a painful knee joint, or sensitivity in the area surrounding the knee, it may be necessary to use two (2) Lavin Lift Straps per leg in the following manner:

  1. Apply the first Lavin Lift Strap in accordance with standard directions.
  2. Attach the second Lavin Lift Strap below the knee. Typically, this will be one size smaller than the strap above the knee at the top of the calf.
  3. Attach both straps to the patient lifter, one loop per hook, and continue operating the lift according to manufacturer’s instructions. Note: some patient lifters may require a chain or web strap adapter kit. These are available through Lavin Lift Strap dealers or other lifter accessory providers.

• If the patient has sensitive skin, additional padding or moleskin-type material may be inserted between the strap and skin to ease any pressure point.
